Signs That Gambling May Be a Problem
- Spending more money or time on gambling than you planned.
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to gamble.
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble.
- Chasing losses — gambling more to win back what you lost.
- Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when trying to cut back.
- Gambling interfering with work, school, or relationships.
If any of these apply to you or someone you care about, please call the NCPG helpline. It's free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.
Tools to Stay in Control
Maxim88 and most regulated operators offer the following controls. We encourage every player to set these before they need them, not after.
Deposit Limits
Cap the amount you can deposit per day, week, or month. Once set, you cannot exceed the limit without a waiting period (typically 24 to 72 hours). This is the single most effective tool for keeping gambling within budget.
Loss Limits
Set a maximum net loss for a given period. When hit, the platform pauses your ability to stake further until the period resets.
Session Time Limits
Set a maximum continuous play time. When reached, the platform interrupts and reminds you to log off. Studies show that setting session limits reduces unplanned overspend.
Reality Checks
Periodic on-screen reminders showing how long you've been playing and your net position. Recommended every 30 or 60 minutes.
Cooling-Off / Time-Out
A short self-imposed break, typically 24 hours to 6 weeks, during which you cannot log in or bet. Use this if you feel you need a short pause without a permanent exclusion.
Self-Exclusion
For longer breaks, self-exclusion blocks your account for 6 months, 1 year, or permanently. Singapore also operates a National Self-Exclusion programme administered by NCPG, covering multiple operators at once. Once you self-exclude, you cannot reverse it until the period ends.
How to Set These Limits at Maxim88
- Log into your Maxim88 account.
- Open the Responsible Gaming or Account Settings section (wording varies).
- Choose the tool — deposit limit, time-out, or self-exclusion.
- Confirm. Some tools take effect immediately; deposit-limit increases have a cooling period for your protection.
If you cannot find the option or it is not working, contact Maxim88 customer support directly via live chat and ask for a responsible-gambling tool to be applied manually. If you cannot reach them, call the NCPG helpline for support.
Tips for Safer Play
- Budget before you play. Decide how much you are willing to lose, and treat it as the cost of entertainment.
- Never chase losses. If you are behind, walk away. Gambling more to recover rarely works.
- Don't gamble when stressed, tired, or under the influence. Judgement is impaired.
- Balance it with other activities. Gambling should not replace sleep, exercise, work, or time with family.
- Talk to someone. Keeping it secret makes it worse. Friends, family, or the NCPG helpline are all good options.
For Families & Friends
If someone you care about is struggling, NCPG also helps family members. Call 1800-6-668-668 for advice, or ask about the NCPG National Self-Exclusion programme which family members can initiate.
